SHUHADA (MATYRS) OF INTERNATIONAL QUDS DAY IN NIGERIA

The following is part of the transcribed statement made by the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Sheikh Ibraheem Yaqoub Zakzaky, to the press in respect to the brutal killings perpetrated by some Nigerian soldiers in Zaria.

“The celebration of International Qud’s day is an event which has been observed in the world as a whole for the last 35 years. In Nigeria, and Zaria to be precise, yesterday’s event was the 32nd. It is marked as solidarity with the Palestinian people. Ever since that time, people have been observing it all over the world, in major cities of the world including Washington, New York, London, and Paris.

“In Nigeria we have been observing it in different cities, at least in about 22 cities, including principally Kaduna, Zaria, Kano, Jos, Bauchi, Katsina, Sokoto, Maiduguri, Yola, Lagos, Ilorin and Port Harcourt among others.

“However all of a sudden there was sporadic shooting from the soldiers. During the shooting they have killed and wounded a lot of people, including children and women. It was during that shooting that one of my sons, Mahmud, a student of Almustapha International University in Beirut, was shot.

“Among those arrested were three of my children - Ahmad, Hameed and Ali. They were taken alive and in good condition. Later on we came to know that, they have already killed Ahmad and Hamid, while Ali was wounded on his leg”.

As a result of the brutal onslaught on the armless members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria during the peaceful procession, the number of those that were killed by the soldiers is 33, while the number of those that were wounded stood at 73. There are 13 persons who are still under detention by the soldiers and currently in Kaduna.

All available evidences have showed that the incidence was never a clash between two armed groups as the soldiers were trying to portray, but rather it was armed soldiers that were seen gunning down innocent and peaceful protesters on the day of the incidence on the 28th Ramadan 1435 AH (25/7/2014).
