25th Shawwal; The Demise of the Fountain of Knowledge and Wisdom!
By: U.S. Adam
With the Name of Allah the Beneficent the Merciful. Peace and blessings of Allah be upon His Chosen Servant Muhammad (S) and Ahlul-Byt (AS).
Imam Ja’afar bn Muhammad (AS) is the 6th Imam in the list of the 12 Islamic leaders and the Prophet’s successors. He was born in Madina and martyred on the 25th of Shawwal 148AH at the age of 65.
Like the Imams before him, Imam Sadiq (AS) have faced several assassination attempt, he was taken to Baghdad severally for that purpose before he was finally poisoned by the then Governor of Madina on the authorithy of Mansur Dawaniqi the Abbasid Caliph. His funeral prayer was conducted by his son and successor (The Seventh Imam) Imam Musa al-Kazim (AS). His pure body was laid to rest in Jannatul-Baqi in Madina.
The contributions of Imam Sadiq (AS) in all branches of knowledge was acclaimed throughout the Islamic world, an estimated number of 4000 people from far-off places attend his school to acquire different varieties of Knowledge. His disciples compiled hundreds of books on various branches of science and arts. Apart from Jurisprudence, Tradition, Commentary, etc. Some of his disciples includes; the famous Theologian and Jurist, Zurara Bn A’yan who was also among the people of consensus and Humran bn Ayan who was an expert in Arabic syntax and Lexicology, Jurisprudence and Theology.
Imam Sadiq (A.S.) also bestowed Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and other science fields to some of his disciples. Example of such is Jabir Bn Hayyan, a famous mathematics scholar, who was one of the Holy Imam's disciples that benefited from the Holy Imam's knowledge and guidance and wrote about 400 books on different subjects.
It is also irrefutable historical fact that all the four major Scholars from the Sunni school of thought have benefited from the knowledge of Imam Sadiq (AS). For example, Abu Hanifa is quoted by many sources as having said "If it was not for those two years (I spent with Imam Ja'afar as-Sadiq) Nu’uman (Abu Hanifah) would have perished": “law laah sanataan la halaka Nu'uman.” Both the Shi’a and Sunni believe that the source of Abu Hanifa's knowledge was mostly derived from his association with Imam Sadiq(A.S.).
Imam Sadiq (A.S.) devoted his whole life to the cause of religious preaching, propagation of the teachings of the Holy Prophet (S) and guiding Muslims of his generation and the future generations from the spiritual and intellectual attack of Monasticism, Celibacy and Baptism through his divine knowledge and wisdom.
Finally, I will like to express my heartfelt condolence to our Noble Prophet Muhammad (S) and members of his pure Household, especially the Imam of our Time (AF).
My sincere condolence goes to the oppressed leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky (H) and to all the entire Muslim Ummah on the demise of this Leader, the fountain of Knowledge, wisdom and ethics.
